Chiropractic Adjustments

The term "adjustment" refers to the specific gentle force chiropractors apply to vertebrae that are misaligned, have abnormal movement patterns, or fail to function normally (subluxation). The objective of the chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation, which results in an increased range of motion, reduced nerve irritability, decreased pain, and improved function.

The adjustment made by the chiropractor consists of a gentle and specific force applied to a vertebra. Depending on the type of adjustment given an audible release of gas (joint cavitation) may be heard. The audible sound is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which releases joint pressure (cavitation).

There are many types of adjustments. Dr. Amanda Smicklas utilizes several different types of techniques to provide a tailored chiropractic program to the individual. Dr. Smicklas most commonly performs Full Spine Diversified Adjusting, Activator Instrument Adjusting, Gonstead, and Thompson Drop. The type of adjustment you will receive will depend on your age, the health of your spine, and your comfort level.
